The Gunners agreed a £27million deal with Brighton for the Belgian winger and managed to get the deal completed by midday on Friday – enabling him to be available for the game against United.

Mikel Arteta sanctioned a move for Trossard after the club lost out on long-standing transfer target Mykhailo Mudryk, who instead joined London rivals Chelsea last week.

The 28-year-old has signed a contract that will run until 2027, with the option of a further year.

He is Arsenal’s first arrival of the January transfer window.

Arsenal edged out arch rivals Tottenham to Trossardwith reports Spurs had offered around £12m for a player who has 18 months left on his contract on the south coast.

Trossard played under Arsenal assistant Albert Stuivenberg at Genk and boss Mikel Arteta said he had spoken to the Dutchman to get a glowing reference.

“We talked about everybody that is connected that we want to recruit because character is something crucial, but as well to understand how they are going to be around the club, but as well personal conversations,” he said.

“Albert did (give a good reference). We are really happy to have him. He’s a player we followed for a while.

“The opportunity came and we had the necessity for a player in the front line who is versatile enough to play different positions.

“He knows the league, he has enough experience here and I think he can have an immediate impact on the team.”

The winger – who has scored seven goals and recorded three assists this campaign – found himself dropped from Brighton’s squad for their game against Liverpool after making it clear he wanted to move on.

He had also been banned from first-team training amid questions over his attitude.

Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi had a public space with his forward’s agent, in which the player’s representative accused De Zerbi of bullying him.

Meanwhile, the Brighton manager claimed Trossard hadn’t been giving maximum effort in training and matches.

But Trossard is relishing his new challenge and told Arsenal’s official website he can’t wait to get going: “This has been my best season in the Premier League.

“We did a great job at Brighton and my form there has been really good. After the World Cup, I didn’t play much because of the situation but I’m just so excited to start here with Arsenal and show myself on the biggest stage for a top club.

“[The club] has so much history and I want to be part of that history going on. That’s why I joined this project. I’m really excited to be here. I want to show myself to all the fans and on the biggest stage.”

Arsenal have been looking to boost their squad depth in their title charge, particularly when it comes to their attacking options.

Gabriel Jesus is still some time off returning from a knee injury suffered at the World Cup, while Emile Smith-Rowe has only just returned to action after a lengthy absence.

The Gunners currently sit five points clear at the top of the Premier League, with a game in hand on second-placed Man City, ahead of Sunday’s visit of Man United.

The club are also set to sign Spezia and Poland defender Jakub Kiwior in a £22million deal.
