Newcastle United want to sign a ‘game-changer’ in the final stages of the January transfer window, journalist DeanJones has told GiveMeSport.

The Magpies have already signed teenager Garang Kuol from Central Coast Mariners but have immediately loaned the striker out to Scottish outfit Hearts.

Newcastle have also seen Chris Wood leaving for Nottingham Forest during the winter window, and Howe told reporters he wanted to replace him with someone able to ‘play straight away’.

“Ideally you want players who can play straight away,” he said. “In our position, we have lost a player who played a lot of football for us, who was very reliable, who stayed fit and contributed.

“To then bring a player in who we can’t use straight away would not make sense. Ideally, yes, we would bring in not necessarily Premier League experience, but someone who is ready to play now would be important.”

Newcastle’s owners, the Saudi Public Investment Fund, have not been afraid to splash the cash since buying the club, and they could strengthen Howe’s charges even further over the coming days.

What has Jones said about Newcastle?

The north east outfit are in the race for a top-four finish following a strong first half of the season, but were held to a goalless draw recently against Crystal Palace.

Howe was still able to bring Alexander Isak and Allan Saint-Maximin off the bench for Newcastle against the Eagles, yet Jones believes the English tactician will want to add some extra firepower to his forward line.

He said: “They brought Isak and Saint-Maximin off the bench, so that shows they’ve still got good options available to them. We know that they are still in the market for another attacker, they want a game-changer.”

Who could Newcastle sign?

The Telegraph have claimed that Newcastle are interested in signing a trio of Chelsea players in the shape of Hakim Ziyech, Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

And transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has stated that the Blues are willing to ‘discuss the bids’ that they have received for the services of Ziyech in the coming days.

Alan Shearer celebrating scoring

Premier League and Newcastle United all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer is a true legend of the game, but when did he leave their club?

The Morocco international has the potential to be a game-changer on his day and showed that at Ajax, registering 49 goals and 81 assists in 165 appearances.

Ziyech has struggled to replicate that form at Chelsea, though, racking up just 25 goal contributions in 98 outings, meaning his acquisition may be viewed as a risk.
